In our latest episode of ‘People & Purpose’, host Tarja Takko engaged in a profound and inspiring dialogue with Maria Ahlström-Bondestam, a distinguished philanthropist and dedicated advocate for children’s rights who works closely with UNICEF. Their conversation explores the vital role of courage, values, and strategic corporate social responsibility in shaping a sustainable and equitable future, not only for businesses but for society at large.

The foundational role of courage and authenticity

Maria eloquently articulates why she has chosen courage as her guiding personal value, underscoring its centrality to living a purposeful and impactful life. She reflects:

“I think I’ve chosen the value courage because I really try, honestly try to be and have courage to be the best version of myself within my reality. And I think that’s actually something that we could all… try to be the best version of yourself within your reality.”

Her journey towards purposeful action was ignited early in life, illustrated by a childhood anecdote where, confronted with a broken playground slide, she took the initiative after her father’s guidance to write directly to the then-President of Finland, Urho Kekkonen, requesting its repair. This formative experience imparted a lasting lesson:

If you care about something, something is important to you. You have to act. You can’t wait for anybody else. And the president’s reply confirmed my desire to contribute to society. His reply made me feel seen and heard and made me feel that my actions matter.

This early empowerment exemplifies how individual agency -nurtured by courage and a good mentor- can spark enduring societal contribution.

Intergenerational legacy

Maria’s commitment is deeply rooted in her family heritage. Her great-great-grandparents, founders of the Ahlström family business, embraced the philosophy that sustainable business success is intrinsically linked to societal wellbeing. They invested in healthcare and equal education for their employees, recognizing these as foundational to both human dignity and corporate prosperity. This ethos continues to permeate the family’s approach, notably through the establishment of the Eva Ahlström Foundation, which supports vulnerable women and children both domestically and globally.

From charity to strategic giving: A paradigm shift for impact

A significant theme of the discussion is the differentiation between charity and strategic philanthropy. Maria emphasizes the imperative to move beyond ad hoc donations driven by emotional impulses toward deliberate investments that address systemic issues:

Charity is often based on emotion. While strategic giving defines a problem, solves it, and scales up results for sustainable impact,” explains Maria.

Partnering with UNICEF that is endowed with the United Nations’ mandate to hold governments accountable for children’s rights amplifies the efficacy and scale of these interventions. This partnership enables a focus on root causes rather than short-term remedies, facilitating sustainable progress.

Collective Impact: Translating global goals into local action

Responding to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) call to action, Maria s launched the Alström Collective Impact initiative in 2020 together with Ahlström portfolio companies and Unicef Finland,. This multi-stakeholder platform unites businesses, foundations, shareholders, and thousands of employees in a concerted effort to invest in children’s education and gender equality: pillars that underpin stable societies and flourishing economies.

“The fact is that all 17 SDGs, either directly or indirectly, affect children. And that’s why we saw, as a Nordic and Finnish company, that education and gender equality are something that we strongly stand behind. That’s our legacy.”

This model underscores how aligning corporate values with sustainable development objectives can drive transformative outcomes.

Corporate and individual roles in advancing social purpose

Maria and Tarja discussed actionable strategies for companies aspiring to embed purpose in their DNA. They recommend beginning with a clear articulation of organizational values and legacy, aligning social responsibility initiatives with core business objectives. Educating and engaging employees and stakeholders fosters a culture of shared purpose, enhancing both organizational performance and social impact.

For employees who feel constrained in their capacity to influence within their organizations, Maria advises courage and coalition-building:

Speak up. Courage to speak up. But I also recognize that it’s not always easy or welcome in the company… Join up with like-minded people. Become stronger as a group. Identify who can help you make that change.

Even small gestures of empathy and engagement can foster inclusion and purpose in everyday interactions, reinforcing the human-centric foundation of sustainable change.
